The Trail Rides (Cavalgadas) are right outside the door of the 17 Ranch in the McDowell Sonoran Preserve  This is an area comprising over 30,000 acres and beautiful desert scenery and wildlife. The trail system is well marked and measured for people to use, whether they are hiking, biking or horse-back riding. In some areas on the trail, there are elevations where the views extend for many miles.

The Marchador Competition will be a learning experience for both horses and riders! As such, we have scheduled a practice session on Saturday so that we may get familiar with the classes and perhaps, the horse you ride. You may decide to judge your practice session and that would be allowed as a time in the finals.

We are choosing classes for the SPORTS competitions of the Mangalarga Marchador breed. The classes that may be Barrels, Poles, the Marchador Ideal Functional Test (Obstacles) or Working Equitation. We are deciding on the categories too! We can classify novice horse and/or novice rider, classes by sex or gait of the horse, professional vs amateur, senior riders etc etc… Stay tuned! The next communication will outline the classes and the rules from the ABCCMM.

The competition will be judged by Dr. George Vilar, our ABCCMM inspector. George spent time in Brazil in November becoming a certified judge (Arbitro de Esporte) for the sports competitions.

Sunday will be planned based on the interest and the responses of the people coming to the event. We will be having an ABCCMM inspection at Silver Stables on Sunday. But whether or not we do another ride or barn tour will be up to you.

There will be horses there to ride. For the competition, we may need to share, but our count right now is about 10 horses that are available. You are also welcome to bring your own horse.

Event Cost:

For Friday and Saturday events the cost is $50 for USMMA members to ride and participate in the planned events. Non-USMMA members will be charged $100 per day as they will need to become USMMA members to participate. Spectators are allowed to watch and come for free! Unless they also want food….- then the charge will be $20. For the detailed cost breakdown, please refer to the sign-up sheets.

Sunday is an OPTIONAL day. We will wait to see how many people want to participate, but as of right now, we are assuming that day is a no-charge day. (Cost for the use of a horse to ride may be extra.)

You are welcome to stay longer, or to just tour Scottsdale on this optional day.  www.experiencescottsdale.com/maps-guides/

Price includes all activities plus lunch on Friday and Saturday, the pool party, and the ribbons and awards for the competition winners. Water and snacks to be provided at the event during the day. The USMMA may hire a professional photographer for Saturday.

Driving:

Driving directions to Scottsdale, AZ and the 17 Ranch, use Google Maps.

Closest Airports:

The closest major airport is the Phoenix Sky Harbor airport. Airport code PHX. All major airlines fly there. Other airports include the Phoenix-MESA airport also sometimes called GATEWAY . Airlines that use that airport are WESTJET, and ALLEGIANT. Airport code AZA or IWA. If you are flying, please let us know your flight information.

Hotels/Houses for Rent:

We have 3 guest casitas at the 17 Ranch available for rental on Thursday, Friday and Saturday with check out on Sunday at 11 a.m. These casitas are one bedroom but sleep 4 (couch) and rent for $200 a night. One of these casitas is already spoken for, leaving 2 available. There is a full kitchen, pool and hot tub. Photos of the casitas are at the end of this document.

Scottsdale Hotels are all of the major chains: Marriott, Holiday Inn, Hilton etc. Look for places to stay on the east side of town, close to the airport for example.

You can also look for AIRBNB or VRBO rentals. The closest ones to the 17 Ranch will be in Rio Verde, AZ or North Scottsdale. Some USMMA participants are offering a spare bedroom to outside participants and some USMMA participants may plan to rent an AIRBNB house for the event. If you are interested in sharing a house, please indicate this on your sign-up form and we will try to make the connections.

Camping/RVs:

We have not found any hookups for trailers / RVs as yet during that timeframe – they are already reserved. However, dry camping hookups are available at my boarding facility OutWest Stallion Station at no charge, and for $15 per night at Paul Dietz Horsemanship. Please let us know on the form if we should reserve a spot for you.

Bringing Horses:

We would love it if you will bring your Marchador horses! All horses from out of state must have a current Coggins and Health Certificate.

Stabling can be arranged at the ranch in a barn or in temporary pens at the 17 Ranch and at OutWest Stallion Station (a few miles away). The cost will be $20 per day for the bedding, feed etc. Please indicate if you will need a stall or pen. They are available on a first-come, first-served basis. We have 5 stalls reserved in our name for now.

WEATHER:

Of course, we are hoping for fabulous weather! We do have a covered arena, just in case. The temperatures in January on average are 65 as the high and 45 as the low.
